I apologize for being lax in my updates as well as perusing my Flist. End of the semester was approaching and I wanted to get some last minute projects completed as well as my one final exam. I did manage to complete everything, unfortunately I failed my final, even though I thought I had a lot of reasonable answers. I was going to do a retake, but I missed the deadline by thatmuch. I hope it doesn’t affect my GPA too much so that I can maintain my Honor Society membership, but if it does, it just means I need to be more diligent. The end game is the degree anyway, and I can get that with either a 3.5 or a 3.0 GPA…

We’re approaching summer and warmer weather. I was out dropping off some library books and getting my allergy shot and I was pretty hot by the time I finished, which also made me somewhat hostile and cranky. I had to tell the lady at the circulation desk that there were pages torn from the two graphic novels I checked out. She seemed to not know anything about it and thanked me for letting her know. I mean, I realize the books were very ‘adult’ in subject matter. One was the GN compilation of From Hell by Alan Moore about the Jack the Ripper murders and the other was Habibi by Craig Thompson. Both were quite good and did not shy away from some very heavy subject matter, but if the torn pages were the result of some sort of censorship, it was the wrong way to do it. Not only is it destruction of public property, but it’s a grievous disservice to anyone who wanted to read those books later on down the line. So I assume the library now has to spend money to replace the books that were damaged. Especially since the missing pages were just that. Missing.

Mom had intended to fill out some documentation from the county about maybe having them pay for her Medicare since we’re receiving assistance from them for food and stuff, but she decided not to since she said they wanted her to give them information she wasn’t willing to give. I have to look at the paperwork myself to see what she means. If it were me, I’d suck it up and do it anyway, especially if it was going to save me money. Who knows?

I’m going to try to make a concentrated effort to actually do stuff this summer as opposed to vegging out in front of the TV. While I do need to catch up on some stuff from my DVR, I’d like to try to make it to the gym on a regular basis since I already pay for a membership as well as maybe doing some of my Pilates down in the basement. Maybe I’ll even make it to the pool once or twice this summer since we now have a key and they power washed it the other day. I have to do it before the kids get out of school for the summer, though if I want to have any privacy. We’ll see what happens.

I don’t know if I mentioned it on here or not, but my dad had mentioned something to me about going with them to Washington DC sometime in October. I’d definitely like to try to go since DC is one of my favorite places and I live closer to it now than I did before. Granted, it’s still six hours away by car, but still… I have a few days off of school around then and I think I can do it. I have to see what my Practicum schedule is like before I make any definite plans. October would be a good time to go since the weather will be cooler than and the fall colors will be out. The last two times I went, it was in the middle of summer and it was insufferable.

I’ll try to scroll through my flist so that I can see what everyone has been up to lately.

Last night was the initiation ceremony for the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society. It was a nice little ceremony with a speaker and punch and cake. Since it’s a Greek Society that’s been around for over 100 years, there was naturally a bit of pomp to go with it. The initiates stood before the officers and listened while they recited the creed of the society and we had to repeat a few phrases. I joked to mom later that I thought they’d prick my finger to make a blood oath or something. We were called up individually to pick up our certificates and a handbook and then we had some group pictures taken. It was pretty nice.

I have a week and a half left of classes and it’s getting crunch time. I’m working on my PowerPoint presentation right now since I can do that on and off during the day. It’s not hard, it’s just time consuming to put together. Then I have to film an instructional video to later edit and post as well as type up a rationale. That’s coming later in the week. I just hope I don’t crash and burn to the point that my overall GPA suffers. I need to maintain a GPA of 3.5 in order to continue with being a member of KDP. No pressure or anything. The summer will be a nice time to relax a little before starting my final semester. I have a load of admiration for those who can work 40+ hours a week and still go to school full time. I know I could never do it.

We have bloomed fully into springtime. The trees and wildflowers are all out in force and the perennials are out as well. Mom and I took a stroll around our neighborhood yesterday and we took some pictures of some dogwood trees and the irises that bloom next to the swimming pool. Mom also has her lilacs blooming in her flowerbed and they smell marvelous! While flowers do indeed grow in Florida, we could never grow lilacs because of the weather, so it’s nice to see them!

I spoke to dad on Easter and he said he’d pay for my dues for the Honor Society Sorority that I was invited to join, so I was happy about that. He and my stepmom are planning a trip to Washington DC in October and they invited me to join them. I have two official days off in October from classes, and I hope to be able to extend it a bit longer if possible, depending on my schedule from my Practicum. October would be a good time to visit since it’s not a major tourist season and the weather should be nicer and the foliage should be changing. Its six hours away from me, so it’s a long trip in an RV. I just hope that it’s a stress free six hours.

He also expressed concern about my graduation in December and being able to take the RV down in winter. I said there’s a Comfort Inn not too far from us where they could stay if they wanted to. I need to get a new dress or skirt for the ceremony since I’d like to not wear my one dress that I’ve been wearing for the past few years now, just as a change. I also need to buy my regalia. It consists of my robe, my cap, my hood and possibly my tassel. I’d like to be able to get the stole for the Honor Society Sorority to wear as well. They have a ‘graduation packet’ of the stole, the tassel that goes around the neck, and a medallion. I also need to pay for the two Praxis Exams I need to take next semester as well…

These next two weeks are going to be busy for me. I have two final projects due, as well as a small final essay, a final exam and a report of sorts to write before the end of classes. I need to try and do as much as I can after Monday (since I’ll be busy all day getting ready for the Kappa Pi Delta thing). The week after that I have a shitload of medical stuff I need to do. I have a doctor’s appointment on the 27th, as well as getting my bloodwork done for my Remicade, which is the 29th. I also have to have my allergy shots done somewhere in there as well. Like I said, BUSY! Hopefully, I won’t stress out too much.

I hope everyone had a nice Easter, if you celebrate it. Mom and I had some ham, potatoes and corn for dinner, which were all very delicious.

I received an invitation to join the Education International Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi. Looking it up, it’s extended to the students in the top 20th percentile, grade-wise, who are Education Majors. Undergrads need a GPA of 3.0 and Graduate Students need one of 3.25. Mine is 3.7, so I guess I qualify. There’s a ceremony on the 20th of April that I need to attend in person (as well as pay the necessary fees) in order to be inducted. It’s kind of flattering, really. I’ve never been in an honor society before. I just hope I don’t cave under pressure and let my GPA drop. Since I don’t have very much time left in this semester and only one more to go next fall, it should be fine. I am a little worried about the seminar class I have to take next semester, which I hear is pretty difficult. I’ll just do the best that I can do and go from there.

I talked to dad today for Easter and he said they’re coming down in this area sometime in the fall and that they want to go to Washington DC sometime. They invited me to go with them and I hope I can go, depending on my schedule. I love DC and the last time I was there in 2008 and I hear that there are some additional sites. Plus, the weather is better in the fall as opposed to the summer, which was when I was there the last two times.

Mom and I went on food stamps recently. I know for some people it may seem shameful or embarrassing, but since neither of us is working right now, any little bit can help. It’s only for edible food items as well as plants that can grow food, like tomato plants.

We got a new neighbor. A young guy who looks to be in his mid to late twenties/early thirties. Mom kind of net him once, but she never found out his name. Tonight we ‘observed’ him moving a few more things in and by the looks of it there are two children with him. One looks to be a girl about 10-ish or so and the other one is a kid about 5-ish. I haven’t seen a wife or girlfriend yet. I dunno if he’s a single father or what. Yes, I know we’re nosy…

We met with our friend the other day and it went well. There were no discussions of politics or religion or anything. It was all neutral, mostly about gardening and outdoorsy stuff and a little about animals. We had a nice little picnic. The picnic area that was attached to the park was filled with school kids doing an Easter egg hunt, so we found another place to eat, which was nice. Then mom and I ran some errands since we were in the area and then went home.

I made me a pros and cons list in regards to going overseas to an International School. It’s pretty even so far. This is what I have:

Pros:
- Travel
- Meet new people
- Steady job for at least two years
- New places
- New opportunities
- Outside of comfort zone

Cons:
- No cats
- Miss friends and family
- Expenses
- Living alone
- Language barrier
- Outside of comfort zone

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking. It’s still something I’m seriously considering, because when else am I going to have an opportunity to go overseas and have a job that I’d be familiar-ish with. I’m leaning for somewhere in the UK, since there wouldn’t be as much of a language barrier. Other places I’d like to go to are maybe Paris, Amsterdam or Tokyo. Nothing is guaranteed or anything, I just hope I don’t end up somewhere with unbearable heat all year ‘round. There are some more local areas that I’d be interested in, like here or Gatlinburg or Asheville thereabouts. I have awhile yet before I get certified to really decide on anything. Some prayers and positive thoughts would be a little appreciated though…
snapdragon76: <3 Kenshin! (Kenshin)
Soooo, I had a bit of an incident last night/early this morning. Before turning in, I went downstairs because I thought I had forgotten something. I guess I had a misstep and I tripped on the bottom landing on my left knee pretty hard and jamming the middle finger of my left hand, which I used to try and break my fall. I was stunned, but no other injuries occurred. I didn’t even hit my head.

So I crawled up the stairs and made my way to the bathroom in order to tend to my knee and I sat down on the toilet when I started to feel dizzy and lightheaded. Apparently, I leaned against the wall and slid and fell between the wall and the toilet (dislodging the toilet slightly). Mom said she heard me fall and so she came in to see what was happening and she said I turned to her and mumbled something about being a dream. Then I blacked out and landed on the floor.

The next thing I remember is waking up on the bathroom floor with my mom standing over me. I was a little wet due to having knocked over the cats’ water dish and I was a little shaken. After a little time passed to regulate my breathing (since I was panicking some), mom brought some dry pajamas and started to clean my skinned knee. She gave me some water and then helped me to bed. She got the blood pressure cuff we have and took my blood pressure to make sure it was within normal range. It was good, 99/75, but I had a bit of a low heart rate.

So I drank a little bit of apple juice and mom stayed with me awhile to make sure I didn’t involuntarily slip into unconsciousness, which I didn’t. I had to sleep sitting up for the rest of the night, which since I’m a side sleeper was kinda difficult. I feel fine now except the swelling on my finger makes it hard to bend, but I know it’s not broken since I can move it and it’s not painful to the touch.

In other, better news, I met with my Graduate Advisor on Friday to go over all that I needed to do to graduate in December. After this semester, I have one regular class to take, a one credit hour seminar and my Practicum, which is 200 hours in a school library. One hundred is in an elementary school and the other 100 is in a secondary school, like a high school or middle school. I have to file for my intent to graduate before September 1st. I also have to take two Praxis exams. One is the Praxis PLT, which is the Principles of Teaching and Learning and then the other one is the 5311, which is the one specifically for School Library Media. I looked at some of the sample questions online and it’s mostly teaching theory and practical applications as well as history and philosophical methods. Not a lot of math, it looks like, which is a relief. Then, before I graduate, I need to do an Oral Presentation with my advisor and one other instructor basically going over all I’ve learned and letting them know that I remember most of what I learned over the course of the past semesters.

Once all of that is done and I graduate and finish my Praxis, I have to contact someone at the school and apply for my certification. After that is finished, I will officially be a School Librarian! Pretty exciting! So, it looks like the Fall 2015 semester is going to be pretty busy!

As Spring Break comes to a close, I get ready to start again on my classes. So far I’m doing fairly well, I just need to remember to make sure I respond to my peers in some of my classes so it doesn’t count against me. Sometimes I get a little ahead of myself and forget to do it.

I have a meeting with my advisor next Friday to discuss what I need to do before I graduate in December. I just want to make sure I have all of my I’s dotted and my T’s crossed before I head towards my next semester. The last day of classes is the 30th of April, which will be here before I know it with finals looming not long afterwards. I have to register for the Praxis sometime before I graduate, either this summer or in the fall. I’m not looking forward to it since it’s important in that I need it to be certified and I don’t do well on exams. I barely passed my GRE. I have a study guide and the amount of mathematics in it is frightening. I dunno if I’ll get any consideration due to my learning disability or not. I need to make a list of things to bring up with my meeting with my advisor and that will probably go on it.

I had a wee bit of a scare today. It’s been raining pretty steadily all day today and I had to go to my Allergist for my regular Allergy shot. I was driving along when at one of the intersections, a lady decided rather abruptly that she needed to get into the other lane. I had to hit my brakes pretty hard and since the road was slick due to the rain, I bumped into her. We pulled over to assess any damages, which there were none to be had, really. It was a hard tap mostly, with barely even any scratches. It still freaked me out, though. She was nice about it and said that since there wasn’t any damage to either of our cars and that no one was hurt, we’d just let it go and continue on our separate ways. She did say she was just as much to blame for pulling out in front of me rather suddenly. I was just glad there wasn’t anything worse that happened.

The weather is staring to warm up some. I was actually able to wear shorts outside yesterday. Grated I was in grungy clothes since we were cleaning the house, but I was still able to go and get the mail without freezing. I had to wear jeans today though since it was a little cooler with the rain and all.
One of our local friends contacted mom about meeting up some time since we hadn’t seen each other for quite a while. I don’t know when exactly, but I’m going to be a bit guarded since she’s the one I’ve had a few disagreements with in the past. We’ll see how things go.

I’m brushing up on my French via the website Duolingo. I figure it couldn’t hurt any. It won’t hurt my chances any if I do decide on going overseas. The more I think about it, the more and more appealing it’s starting to sound. Who knows where the wind will take me once I’m done with school…

I seem to be noticing a “once-a-month-update” pattern lately. It’s not a deliberate thing, it’s just the way it is.

Anyhoodle, other than school and medical stuff, not much has been going on. We had a major snowstorm happen a week ago, so we had a nice couple of days where there was a lot of snow on the ground. Schools were closed for almost a week in some areas, including the university. I was going to have my Remicade last Thursday, but due to weather, it was moved to tomorrow.

Mom and I did get a chance to go and take some pictures of the snow-covered historical area that we frequent sometimes, so that was neat.

In other news, I’ve been doing some research on International Schools. It’s an idea in the back of my mind to be a librarian at one maybe. My main concern would be my medical treatments, but sometimes you need to do things out of the box once in a while I still have some more research to do and all that important stuff, but it’s a possibility. I have a meeting with my advisor on the 20th to see what all I need to do in order to finish my schooling.

I did my FAFSA done and processed for next semester, so at least that’s out of the way. I’m trying not to think of the debt I’m racking up at the moment. -_-
snapdragon76: Zach rocking the 360 cameras at the MTV Movie Awards (Zach 360)
Not much new going on aside from classes. I did fill out my tax return and am waiting for my refund now. I have an idea of what I’d like to do with it, if I can. A new camera if possible. Mom keeps saying we’re going to get the car worked on soon, but nothing has happened yet. Our main issue is that since we only have one car, we have no way of getting back home once we drop it off at the repair place. I’m a little tired of being in a holding pattern in regards to this since I have other things I could do, but time will tell I guess.

I have been looking into the idea of possibly applying to be a librarian at an International School overseas somewhere. Granted, I still have a few things to do before I can even qualify, like finish my last two semesters of school, graduate, become certified – which involves taking, and passing, the PRAXIS Exam *sobs*--, and doing an oral presentation. But, I figured it’d be a way to broaden my employment options as well as a chance to go overseas. Ideally I’d like to go to France, Japan or the UK. I looked and saw that there are plenty of International Schools in all three locations. The plus side is that the school will pay for travel expenses and the schools teach in English. Some of the larger ones even have TWO libraries. The minus side is that it can be kinda scary and there might not be any openings available. Nothing is definite and I’d like to find something local if at all possible, but the intrigue is there. A kind of “What if?” scenario.

The ‘scarf’ I’m knitting will most likely not be a scarf given the amount of yarn I have, but it won’t be a total bust since it’ll be practice. I did look through the books I bought and I never realized how much math is involved in knitting patterns. I’ll definitely be keeping things simple for a while.
Signing off for now. Hopefully, there will be more to report on later on at some point.

Sorry I haven’t been posting much lately. Time seems to get away from me sometimes…

I didn’t do a Year in Review post like I usually do, mostly because I forgot and also because I don’t know how many people are actually still reading this journal anyway.

My GI doctor wanted to put me back on Remicade again, so I had my first treatment in well over a year two weeks ago and it went fine. I slept through most of it since they give me Benadryl so prevent any allergic reactions and the like. I was supposed to have another one Wednesday, but I was supposed to have lab work done apparently (even though we asked the nurse TWICE if I needed it and she said no), so I had to reschedule. So, mom and I went to Target to get me some more long sleeved shirts and then to Books A Million to browse (and to buy, who are we kidding here). Then we had lunch at my favorite Chinese place before going back home. I’ve rescheduled my appointment for next week and I will make sure to have my labs done well ahead of time.

I also went to my allergist Monday, and he gave me a prescription for an EpiPen for my shellfish allergy. He said that even though I won’t consciously eat shellfish, there is always a chance for cross contamination. He also said I can start getting allergy shots, so I have an appointment set up for that in a few weeks. I used to do them myself a few years ago, but here they have a place to go to to get them done. I also started doing Neti Pot rinses and I can tell a major difference when I do! It does feel weird, though and I have to position my head just so, so I don’t dribble water down the front of me.

Classes started up again on Tuesday. I had to drop one class and register for another when I realized I got one I really didn’t want. Things should be all set now. So, after this one, I just have one more semester to go before graduation and then my Praxis exam (which I am NOT looking forward to in the slightest). Luckily, next fall I only have to take one class in addition to my Practicum, so that will be easier for me since the Practicum will take up a lot of my time. For those who don’t know, the Practicum is the School Librarian version of student teaching. We go into a school library, one-half in an elementary school and the other half in a secondary school. Sort of like a hands-on approach. I need to talk to my advisor about what I’d need to do to possibly get a certification to work in a public library in order to increase my employment chances.

I’ve been knitting some. I had to take a bit of a break since I hurt my arm somehow, but I may start up again soon since it’s feeling better. I made two scarves for my Tonner Jasper and Alice dolls, and now I’m making one for me. I have no pattern to follow, just basic stockinet stitching. I did buy a book of basic patterns, so hopefully I can attempt to make something other than scarves.

I started reading a new manga series called Vinland Saga by Makoto Yukimura. It’s about Vikings in the 11th-Century set around Danish occupied England and Iceland. It’s pretty good so far and the art is amazing! I’ve always been impressed with these series where the manga-ka does a ton of research and puts a lot of details in their work. Plus, Vikings!

I did get a phone upgrade since I was due for one and my other one was acting up. I went from an iPhone 5 to an iPhone 6. Gold colored! I like it. The screen is bigger and it has a few new features that I like, such as the fingerprint identification to unlock the phone. I need to find a way to reset my iPod so that I can go back to factory setting so that I can reload it with my music and podcasts and not much else. However, I have it registered to my old email address from my Florida ISP, and I can’t remember the password in order to change it. So it’s a bit frustrating.

I’m signing off for now. Hopefully, I’ll be back on here sooner rather than later.
snapdragon76: this is made of win and awesome (Default)
Hello everyone.

I hope everyone had a nice Christmas (or other Holiday if you so celebrate). Ours was very low-key. Not just financially, even though that did play somewhat of a factor. Mostly because December is a bit of a downer month here for us. My sister’s birthday is the 18th and the anniversary of her death is the 26th. So things are kind of subdued. Plus, mom misses spending holidays with my aunt and her family. I know that it’s important to her, but I told her that even though it’s just the two of us, it’s still family and we should be happy for that at least. That seemed to make her feel a little better.

I did get a few things, like a few Blu-Rays from my dad as well as a few knitting items. Yes, I plan to teach myself how to knit! I even joined Ravelry and my username on there is snapdragon1976 in case anyone want to go friend me! I got a couple of small Guardians of the Galaxy action figures from mom, which knowing how tight money is, was most appreciated and unexpected. I hope to be able to return the favor once I get my student loan.

Mom tells me that when I get my loan money and we can get the cars fixed (again), she’ll put more of a serious effort into finding work. I’d like to believe it, but a part of me doesn’t. She’s been out of work for over six months now and even though we need the money badly (my monthly annuity and her monthly Social Security isn’t enough), I think she’s gotten used to not working and being able to do things at her leisure. As well as I think there is a fair amount of discouragement she feels being in her 60’s and trying to find work.

I haven’t had much luck on the GA front myself. The one I applied for at the lab school at the University was a bust since I was told that the school is undergoing staffing changes and there won’t be a need for a GA there anymore.

I start my Remicade treatment for my Crohn’s back again on the 7th. I didn’t have a bad experience when I did it last time, but the human body being what it is and wanting to be fickle much of the time, it may decide to cause me grief. I mean, I know that due to the fact that it’s an immunosuppressant that I’ll be more prone to infections, but hopefully I won’t have stuff like massive hair loss and other major side effects. I tell you, having an invisible chronic illness sucks balls.

I may do a Year in Review post for January like I usually do, except for this past January, when I got over ambitious with it and never finished… Like I was going to do some excerpts from my journal over the past ten years since I’ve been on LJ for ten years. Maybe that’s one goal I can work on for 2015 as well as maintaining a more regulated sleep pattern instead of submitting to my night owl tendencies to stay up until 2:30-3:00 in the morning…

That’s all for now. Hopefully, I’ll be more diligent in my regular postings instead of once a month as I seem to be doing. Hopefully, I can discipline myself enough to do it.

I've decided I'm doing something a weeee bit different this year. I still plan on sending out Christmas letters, but I'm also posting it online for people to read who I don't have a physical address for or that I know checks my Facebook page on a regular basis. That way, it cuts down on how much I mail out. If anyone still wants me to send out a physical letter to them, just let me know and I'll message you for your address (as well as mine if you want to send a card). My email will be fine too. It's danielle.bates32@gmail.com

It's pretty short. We've had a pretty low-key year.

I also finished all of my classwork for my classes for this semester. The hardest one was the Research Proposal I had to write. I don't know what sort of grade I'll get but at least I finished it. I also have an interview for a GA position at the on-campus laboratory school library on Thursday. I don't know if I'll get the position or not, but here's hoping. Maybe I'll be a GA once again and hopefully I won't screw this one up!
snapdragon76: *slurrrrp* (Tea!)
Well, here we are in the middle of November already. Everything seems to be going by so fast. We’ve already had some snow, the day after Halloween. Mom and I went to do some errands and it seems everyone was out that day too! So crowded! Most of the leaves of the maple tree in front of the house have already fallen. There are still quite a few trees full of color out there, however.

School is a little rough at present. We’re getting toward the end of the semester (last day of classes are December 4th). Right now, I’m struggling with trying to write a Literature Review for the Research Proposal we have to write, neither one I’ve ever done before. I’m trying to not go into full anxiety mode right now. It wouldn’t be a big deal except the Research Proposal is worth a full 50% of our total grade!! Yikes!
But, I’m trying to be Zen about the whole thing. It didn’t help matters any that I have three assignments due all on the same day. I don’t know how people who go to school full time and also work full time manage to do it. I applaud them.

I’m going to be writing up my Christmas/Holiday/Winter Season letter soon. If anyone on here would like me to send you one, please email me and let me know where to send it. My email address is danielle.bates32@gmail.com. Also if you’d like my address for cards as well.

Things are kinda tight money wise since neither one of us has a job. Mom is hoping to get her car fixed so that she can make a more serious effort to look for work. I’ll believe it when I see it. I did say I’d help her update her resume, and hopefully I can finish my classwork in order to help her out.

Peace out!
snapdragon76: Did I mention that I like reading? (books)
Well, here we are, my third week of school and things are going pretty good so far. I have to tell myself not to get too ahead of myself and panic about stuff and to take things one project at a time. I have no doubt that a number of my classmates are way ahead of me, but as long as I get things done by the deadline, I’ll be fine. Going to the public library for a few hours a week helps since it provides fewer distractions than at home.

I did start going to the gym again this week. It may take me only one or two days a week for around an hour or so, but it’s progress!! I just need to be disciplined and stick with it.

My dad and stepmom will be coming later on next week and stay for a little over nine days. I’m looking forward to them visiting, since it’ll get me out of the house more. Due to the timing, I think if I can get my assignments for the next two weeks finished earlier in the week, I can have more time to spend with them and not worry about school stuff.

I was able to get my brakes fixed finally! A former co-worker of mom’s whom she keeps in contact with on Facebook had her husband stop by (who used to be a mechanic) and take care of them. It’s so nice to have brakes again! And according to him, it was none too soon since one of the brake rotors was worn down so thin that if I had driven on them for much longer, I’d have had a blowout! Yikes!

Now, tomorrow, mom is getting tires for her car so we can at least move it to the garage so that the HOA will stop putting notices on it threatening to tow it. There is still something wrong with it that we haven’t pinpointed yet, but I hope we can get it figured out soon so that I can have my car to myself once again.

That’s all there is for now. Things have been a little busy with school and all so I hope to be able to keep updated soon.

snapdragon76: Did I mention that I like reading? (books)
School will be starting up again in a week or so, and I feel a mix of excitement and nervousness. I know I can do well since I did so well last semester (aside from the GA debacle), but it’s been quite a few months and I have to gear myself up again. It helped that I was on campus every day and could work on school stuff will relatively little distraction. This time, I’ll be at home with many temptations around. I do think I’ll be going to the public library quite often so that I can have a quiet environment with little to no distractions and that will probably help quite a bit. Plus, it’ll get me out of the house some as well.

First I need to get my car fixed. I should be getting my student loan money within the next few days, so I can pay for my tuition and my books as well as other expenses. I’m getting quite a bit this time around so that we can finally get some things taken care of that’s been neglected, like my car and paying off a few things, in addition to getting a few things we’ve been wanting for awhile, like a new washing machine and a chest freezer. I’m not gonna go crazy though. I did contact a financial advisor so that I can get the ball rolling on saving for retirement. I need to be employed first and foremost. Hopefully, I can find opportunities fairly soon after graduation. I have to reconcile the fact that I may not find anything local and will have to relocate. I’m trying not to think about it too much at present.

Some friends of mom’s will be in the area on Labor Day weekend and are going to stop by on their way to a wedding in North Carolina. I know mom is looking forward to it, and we’ve been cleaning the house like crazy. We reorganized the basement some since I’m getting a new bed soon and we’re gonna put the twin bed down there. We’re also going to rearrange the garage so that we can have a place for the chest freezer as well as my bedroom so that my full sized bed will fit better. I’ll try to post pictures when I’m finished.

The weather is becoming more temperate as the month goes on, which I’m glad for. Summer is my least favorite season and it seems to last the longest. I could be exaggerating, but it really does feel like it takes forever. I have yet to use the swimming pool since we got our pool key, and now that public school has started here, it should be less crowded during the week. I guess I should get busy and get swimming before it gets too cold to do so.

Before I finish, something… weird has been going on next door. We got new neighbors about five to six months ago (who were a MASSIVE improvement over the old ones), and they spent a lot of time effort and money to get it fixed up with new appliances and the like when they moved in. They were pretty nice and they said they liked how quiet the area was. Then, today, there was a U-Haul in front of their place and it was being loaded up with a lot of stuff, including the porch furniture and the bird feeder. I was curious, so when I went to get the mail, I peeked inside the mailbox and saw a change of address notification inside. I wonder what would make them pull up and move when they bought the condo and had it all fixed up for them to live in. It makes me wonder…

Sorry I haven’t been posting a great deal lately. This being the summertime and with mom still being out of work and classes not starting for another few weeks, things have been very low key. Plus, my car is acting up and we don’t want to drive it too much until I can get the money to get it fixed. Luckily I’ll be getting my student loan soon and will be able to get my car fixed as well as a few other things that have been neglected. I look forward to being able to go places since I feel like I’ve been trapped in my house for months on end.

I’m trying to gently prod mom to be more proactive in finding another job. I know there’s an element of disillusionment on her part, but unfortunately, she has to find a job and sometime soon. Maybe once we get her a set of wheels, she’ll be more inclined to get out more… and out of my hair.

I did apply for a GA position at the campus library, which would’ve been perfect for me, but alas, I didn’t get it. I was told they’d hang onto my application until next semester in case another spot opens up, so there’s still hope.

I saw ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ on Saturday (I did have at least a little bit of money to be able to see that), and it was friggin’ AWESOME!!! Fun and action packed and the soundtrack is amazing (and I’m totally gonna buy it when I get the chance). If you haven’t seen it yet, I highly suggest that you do!

Dad called me for my birthday last week and it was nice to talk to him. He did invite mom and I to go to Mackinac Island with them next summer, which excites us both since we’ve never been and mom’s always wanted to be able to go for quite some time. He said there’s also a train that goes into Canada during certain times of the year, which he said we’d go on. It sounds exciting and I’m looking forward to it.

I did contact a Financial Advisor to set up some sort of investment plan for the future, which is a major step for me towards actual adulthood. My main priority is having a decent retirement fund so that I don’t have to work until I’m in my 70’s or something. Plus, I’d like to be able to enjoy my retirement and all of that stuff. Maybe buy a house or something.

Our A/C was fixed, allegedly. It was working fine for a while, but now it’s getting hot in the house again. It doesn’t help matters any that our sliding doors have full on Southern exposure and it gets pretty hot pretty fast. Needless to say, I’m looking forward to autumn.

I had a nice birthday. Since mom and I are tight on money, we didn’t do anything, but we said we’d make up for it later on, for both of us since hers was in June and we didn’t do anything for hers either. I did get my annual birthday stash from my dad. I got a Hufflepuff scarf, a phone case that looks like a mini book, and the Blu-ray set of the ‘Twilight’ movies (I know, I know. Everyone has a guilty pleasure. Mine are lame romances… some of which aren’t so lame). I did receive a very nice gift card from a friend (thank you, [personal profile] rosehiptea) from Barnes & Noble which I used on books (of course).

I had a colonoscopy in early July. It went well. I still dislike the prep, but that’s part of the process, unfortunately. The GI doc wants to do another one in two years. I have an appointment with him on the 18th, and we’ll see where things progress after that. He did say that he doesn’t want to put me back on Remicade for the time being. He said there is medication that is between that and what I’m taking now, so I hope that will work well.

That pretty much it for now. Maybe in the next few weeks or so there will be more to report.

Hello all! Time for another update.

Mom is still unemployed. She’s looking into applying for Unemployment Benefits, so that might help us out a little. I know mom is reluctant to find a job where she doesn’t really feel satisfied, but she might not have much choice. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see what happens next. Right now she’s been trying to finish a few projects around the house to keep herself busy. I think maybe she needs to volunteer again somewhere in the meantime. I think maybe one the Fourth of July is over, she might look into it more.

Starting tomorrow I have to do my ‘colonoscopy cleanse’ for my procedure on Wednesday. The morning isn’t so bad, it’s the taking of the liquid prep that’s the nasty part. And what follows isn’t so fun either. But, it’s only once a year (usually). I missed last year due to moving and transitioning to a new area as well as not having established with a GI at that point. I’ve been lucky that I haven’t had any flare ups or anything so far, despite being off of my Remicade for over a year. That’s one reason I’m having my colonoscopy done, to see what my colon is looking like and to determine if they want me to go back on Remicade. I’ll try not to be too grumpy tomorrow…

We’ve been having a lot of birds at our feeder in the front of our house recently. There have been finches, cardinals, blue jays, mourning doves and a couple of very fat squirrels…

I filled out my FAFSA for the 2014-2015 school year. Hopefully, I’ll hear back soon and be able to get a loan so I can pay for my classes and maybe have extra for other expenses like books, supplies and maybe I can get my car tuned up. Since the GA job doesn’t look promising, this is my only option right now. It might take me until I retire to pay it back, but so do most grad students in the rest of the country. I hope I can find a job soon after graduation so I can pay it back fairly soon. But, that’s gonna be a few years from now at least.

That’s all that’s been going on lately. I’ll try not to wait too long between updates, but things are kinda slow right now.

Well, mom got fired today. It seems she took too many sick days. Apparently at her company no one is allowed more than two call in days per year, which I think is a profoundly stupid policy (it may be as high as three. It’s still a stupid policy). Mom missed five, all due to illness and not just for the hell of it. I guess this last one was one too many and so she was fired. I mean, we still have her Social Security checks and my annuity coming in, so we’ll still have some income coming in, but it’ll still be tight. Hopefully she can find something better fairly soon. And I hope I can get another GA position once school starts, which would help tremendously.

Personally, I was wondering how long the company was going to hang onto the employees it has already. In the past few weeks, they already lost three employees (not counting mom) and may lose another due to having to take care of her brother because of health reasons. There was a managerial change recently, and that usually begins the downfall. It happened with the last company we were with as well. Maybe this will enable mom to get a job she likes better, like at the VA. So I’m going to be off of Facebook and Twitter for a bit because I can’t deal with people right now…

My back started acting up again, which is the last thing I need right now.

When it rains, it pours…

Hello everyone! I’m typing this from my new computer (thank God for tax returns). My old laptop up and died on me due to the motherboard croaking, which is the same thing that happened to my mom’s computer, interestingly enough.

It’s an HP, like my other one, and it’s very nice and shiny. It’ll be nice to have when I start classes again in the fall. I still don’t know what my status is for my GA. I did get straight A’s in all of my classes though, so that was nice.

I need to get an enclosure for my old hard drive so that I can access my old pictures and music files that I wasn’t able to transfer before it quit on me.

Otherwise, not much is going on, except for me trying to keep myself busy over the summer until classes begin again. I’ve mostly been doing housework and the like since we’re down to one car and I can’t really go anywhere. It sucks, but it is what it is.

Mom and I did get to do a little bit of exploring over the weekend, and it was nice. We were trying to find some waterfalls, but we didn’t find any that were accessible, and we also got a little lost and ended up in North Carolina for a bit. We did get a few nice pictures of some more mountains and some interesting land features. One of the many things to enjoy about living here is the change in seasons and the land features Tennessee has to offer. You can see some of the pictures I’ve taken so far this summer here at my Flickr album.

I noticed that there was a change in the layout of LJ. It looks nice, but the one thing I don’t like about it is that it makes it harder for you to read your filtered Flist then the old format had. Hopefully, the bugs and kinks will be worked out before too long. I haven’t been able to find a client for my new computer (named Purple Onion due to the color), and I think maybe that’s why I’ve had problems with people seeing my posts is that there were issues with the client I used. Go figure.

I have a mammogram in the morning (my first), which means that I need to get up early in order to take mom to work so that I can have the car for the day. I also have a DEXA scan next month and a colonoscopy in early July. What a fun summer so far…

Well, my laptop decided to upchuck on me today. It’s doing the same thing mom’s did which means it’s not booting up. Luckily I have my Surface (which I am currently using) and my desktop to use. However, mom was time sharing with me and now that might be a bit more difficult. Lucky me.

I’m mostly upset about not having access to some of my programs and pictures. I told myself that I was going to transfer my pictures to my external hard drive, but I never did and now I’m kicking myself for not doing it. If we can figure out what the deal is with mom’s, maybe I can figure out what is going on with mine. I at least want to be able to transfer my photos.

This weekend looks to be a busy one, but fun. There’s a thing called “Wooly Days” at one of the historical sites and there will be sheep and lambs and lots of interesting stuff going on. Also, the college campus is having a Bluegrass Concert which we also wasn’t to go to. Sounds like fun!

School is going well! My grades look to be good. I just have to finish these next few weeks and pass my finals and I’ll be good to go! I hope to be able to go to my high school reunion this summer. I have some money I got from my tax return, so I could pay for it, but I want mom to come to since I know she’d like to see people (not to my actual reunion, just to Florida with me). So, hopefully we can pull it off.

Spring is here!! I love it! All the flowers and the green trees! Here are the pictures I took of some of the flowering trees that are around. It’s a lot nicer than being in Florida (at least for me) since it’s more than simply “hot and slightly less hot”.

Signing off for now. Hopefully I can still see everyone around.
