OK, so I saw Star Wars The Force Awakens today and I have thoughts. I shall put them under a cut as to spare everyone from spoilers.
The movie is called The Force Awakens, but should probably be called Daddy Issues: The Movie. Now, as a fan of the former EU (now called Legacy and is pretty much null and void), I did see a little bit of parallels to it, like the son turning to the Dark Side. However, I saw more than a few similarities to A New Hope. Not that that's necessarily a bad thing. I know there are some out there who think it's a little too on the nose, but it didn't diminish my enjoyment of it in any way. Case in point:
Rey = Luke Skywalker. She grew up on a desert planet, befriends a droid and is kind of thrust into adventure. Unlike Luke, however, she didn't want to leave. She keeps thinking her family will return to find her, so she wants to stay and be found by them. Nothing is said if she's Luke's daughter or not (although she had visions of the location where she found Luke, interestingly enough). Wether she is or not, isn't addressed, at least not in this movie. Maybe in future ones. I did find it very interesting that she knew so much about how to fly the Millennium Falcon...
She's also very Force sensitive as well. She wields a pretty mean lightsaber for having absolutely no training whatsoever.
Finn = Han Solo. Although Finn is a Stormtrooper and in novelizations, Han was an Imperial officer, there are't too many similarities. I do like Finn as a character, though. He's charming and funny and has a good heart, which is why he probably defected from The First Order. He also proves that someone can fight their nurturing and be more in sync with their true nature.
Poe Dameron = Wedge Antillies. Granted, Poe had a loooooot more screen time than Wedge ever had in the films, Poe plays an important part in the movie. He gets the whole ball rolling, as it were (figuratively and literally if you include BB-8). I definitely liked Poe as a character and even though he was missing for a large chunk of the movie, he kinda gave Finn the push he needed to start his Heel Face Turn, as well as his name.
BB-8 = R2-D2. R2 was in the movie, even though he was pretty much catatonic the majority of the time. BB-8 carried the MaGuffin needed and both the Rebellion and the First Order were looking for him. He's pretty adorable and if I had $150.00 to spare, I'd totally buy the remote version of him.
Kylo Ren = Darth Vader. Well, considering Ren pretty much hero (or villain) worships Vader, it makes sense. Oh, and Vader is his grandfather. Yep, Kylo Ren is really... BEN SOLO! Han and Leia's son! Honestly, I never saw that one coming. Anyone familiar with the EU also know that Han and Leia's son, Jacen, falls to the Dark Side to become Darth Caedus and gets killed by his twin sister. Here, no twin sister. It seems Ben's fall came from being seduced by Snoke (more on him in a bit) and therefore, it cause Luke to feel guilty for his nephew's downfall, that he went into exile and cause Han to resume his smuggling ways to deal with his grief. Leia threw herself into her leadership role in the Resistance to deal with her grief. I was also pretty shocked that he killed Han. Or did he?
General Hux = Grand Moff Tarkin. He basically bosses everyone around, including Kylo Ren, much like Tarkin did in ANH. He's not Force sensitive, but he seems to respect it enough to let Ren do his thing. He also answers to an even higher authority.
Snoke = The Emperor. I guess this guy is the new Big Bad. We never see him in person, but he seems to have enough influence to lure Ben away from the Light Side and become his flunky and turn his back on his own family. I think we may learn more about him in subsequent movies.
I'd like to read some of the supplemental materials like the books and prequel information to find out a little more of the backstory of how the First Order came into being after Episode VI. I'm sure it's in there somewhere.
Overall, I did like the movie. A lot. I do think I'll see it again. I know I will with mom since she missed out this time around.
So, those are my thoughts. I think I was more coherent than I thought I would be. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what next on the horizon.
