Well, a bit of a tale about our adventures tonight. Mom and I went to the storage place to add/remove some items, mostly for the church rummage sale. While we were finishing loading everything up, the power went out all of a sudden. We tried using the elevator. No chance. Soooo we had to haul the stuff we were bringing back down two flights of stairs, in the dark while it was inclement weather outside.
We get everything loaded up and drive to the front gate to discover that it wouldn’t open. Well, due to the power outage, this was to be expected. So we tried calling the toll free number for the company to see if maybe the manager or someone could come down and perhaps free up. They were no help whatsoever. Basically they said that once the manager leaves for the day that was pretty much it. So, yeah…
They pretty much told us that we could either a) find the “pedestrian gate” and leave our car there and come back for it in the morning. That wasn’t an option for us because it’s our only car, or call the police. You can guess which option we chose.
We had to call 911 because we didn’t have the non-emergency number. They were very nice to us and told us that they would contact someone to help us, but we might have to wait a while because of the storm front we had today.
Imagine our profound surprise when a black unmarked police cruiser pulled up and an officer emerged. Bless the local constabulary!! He assessed the situation and eventually jumped the gate and examined the motor. Apparently there’s a little door on the side of the motor housing which holds a small crank. Guess what that crank does? Well, when you place it in an opening on the side of the motor housing and turn it, it manually opens the gate! Imagine that!
Needless to say, we were somewhat embarrassed about the solution to our problem being such a simple thing. The officer was gracious about it though.
Our euphoric enjoyment of our freedom was marred by our cat making a mess in the apartment while we were away…

Luckily no storm! Mostly just massive wind gusts. I swore we were gonna end up in Oz!

He was OK I suppose. He was in his forties and slightly balding. Also married, so it was kinda moot anyway...
