snapdragon76: this is made of win and awesome (Kyoru ch. 109 (flamika))
Mom's waterbed sprang a leak last night, so now I have to wash her sheets. I usually do anyway, but I have to wait to put them back on the bed so we can check and see if there are any other leaks and to get rid of the air bubble in the bed. So, last night she slept on the futon.

And I was a bit hurt about some of the spoiler crap that was going on in the FMA thread on CLASP. It's not like we did it intentionally or anything. I happen to think they're way overreacting to this whole thing. Watch me get banned for it...

OK, I shall try to do a brief summary of ch. 109. What's that you say? Didn't 108 just come out? Yes it did, but 109 came out not too long after that...

The time has come for the anniversary of Kyoko's death and for Tohru and her friends' annual visit to her grave. Kyo tells Tohru he won't be able to join them ths year (unlike last year), which Tohru accepts.

Kyo is perfectly aware that he's 'running away' from his feelings and that he simply can't face them under those particular circumstances. However, as he's wandering around, he finds himself outside the temple where the grave is. He thinks back to the year before and wonders if there was another picnic at the graveside. He also remembers Hana-chan asking him why he had such feelings of regret standing in front of Kyoko's grave.

Instead of visting the grave, he simply decides to head back home when he suddenly realizes he hasn't visited his own mother's grave in quite some time. He rememebrs the last time he was there with Kazuma and Kazuma asking if Kyo wanted to burn some incense for her. Then Kyo's father comments (rather snidely I imagine) that the reason Kyo can't go to his mother's grave is because he has a guilty conscience about her death (for which he was blamed for). Kazuma reprimands him, saying he shouldn't say such things in front of a child. Kyo's father shoots back that he said such a thing because he was a child. "He doesn't understand anyway."

But Kyo thinks back that he did understand. As he turns to go, he sees someone sitting nearby. It's Tohru's grandfather (on her father's side). Mr. Honda says he remembers Kyo from before due the color of his hair (from the time he and Yuki went to bring Tohru back). He also comments that he's grown quite a bit since the last time, as children tend to do. He also thanks Kyo for taking care of Kyoko, then corrects himself and calls Tohru by her given name. Kyo asks Mr. Honda why he's sitting there and he explains that he threw his back out and is waiting for his family to come and pick him up (I bet he was there to visit Kyoko, too).

Mr. Honda guesses that Kyo is there to visit Kyoko and then proceeds to ask how Kyoko is doing. He again corrects himself and says Tohru. Kyo, a bit annoyed, asks why Mr. Honda always calls Tohru by her mom's name and says it's a bit in poor taste to do so. Mr. Honda asnwers that he does so in order to maintain the connection to Kyoko. To prove that her presence was still felt. He was afraid that otherwise, Tohru would've completely broken. It was also for his own sake as well he did so. He said, eventually everyone leaves and he wanted to hang onto that.

Mr. Honda then asks Kyo if he knew why Tohru speaks so formally. Kyo admits he didn't. Mr. Honda then goes onto explain it was Tohru's way of imitating her father, Katsuya. It seems, at his funeral, some other relatives were talking about how Tohru doesn't remotely look like her father. They kept saying she was probably someone else's child (I'll go into my thoughts on this later). Mr. Honda said he thought that they didn't think saying such a thing in front of her would really affect her since she was so young, but he disagrees. He believes children are perfectly capable of understanding what adults say, especially if it's said in malice.

He then tells Kyo that such comments really worried Tohru and how she was also worried about Kyoko. Kyoko was very deeply in her grief and started to withdraw. Tohru was trying to understand just what had happened. Why her father had suddenly gone and why her mother was acting the way she was. She was afraid her mother would go away as well. She thought her father was going to 'send for her' and go to where he was. Tohru had noticed that Kyoko was in a deep depression and was worried it was partly to do with the fact she didn't resemble Katsuya (there's a really sweet scene where little Tohru is looking up at one of the suits her father had owned hanging on the door). She kept thinking that if she were to find a way to be the same as him, he mother would start to be happy again.

Then Mr. Honda mentions that there was a time when Kyoko didn't come home (which was covered in a bit more detail in an earlier chapter). After that was when Tohru changed her speech pattern to her father's. In a flashback, Kyoko expresses regret in having so much sadness come upon Tohru. And that without her, she didn't know how she'd have been able to continue. So, for Tohru's sake, she'll continue on.

Kyo then reflects on how Tohru hasn't had much of an easy life herself. He then thinks back to a time much earlier (after his own encounter with Kyoko), where he had looked in on her once when she was home by herself. He noticed that she seemed quite lonely.

Back at Shigure's Tohru is hanging the bed linens she had washed, still in her dress from the graveside visit. She is suddenly startled when she realizes that Kyo's behind her since she wasn't aware he'd come home. He says he only just came in and she mentions she had come home early too. She tells him she was concerned that there might be rain, but it seemd nice out so far which made her happy. She didn't want there to be bad weather on the anniversary of her mother's death.

Suddenly, Kyo asks Tohru about her father and that she had told him one time she didn't know him very well. She tells him that she really doesn't look like her father, but that their speech patterns were similar. She goes onto say that even her mother had mentioned something about it. Kyo tells her he thought that was nice but then Tohru quickly says it was a lie. She said that due to the fact there wasn't a resemblance, she intentionally imitated his manner of speaking. Originally she had though badly of Katsuya even though she specifically remembers him being very kind to her. However, she was afraid he'd take Kyoko 'away with him' so she took up his speech patterns as a way of keeping her with her. She was afraid of being left alon that she'd do most anything to keep Kyoko leaving, including making Katsuya out to be a bad person. Basically tainting the few memories she had of her father (at least, that's my understanding. The summary I read seemed a bit vaugue on this part).

Kyo is thinking that she's placing the blame on herself for making her father out to be something he wasn't. She felt she was being selfish in that respect all in order to prevent Kyoko for going away. He's finding that to actually be a bit endearing.

Kyo then grabs Tohru's shoulders through the sheets and explains to her that her mother understood all she was going through in her own right. And that she was still able to manage Kyoko through her own grief, despite going through her own difficulites. Tohru then tries to apologize to Kyo for discussing something so depressing, but Kyo interrupts her telling her it was OK. That she's doesn't have to worry about talking about what was in her heart or on her mind (there's a super cute 'hugging trough the sheet' scene. More on that later).

Kyo then thinks back to earlier in the day when he was talking to Mr. Honda and he asked why he would discuss something so personal with him. Mr. Honda tells him that he believes that Tohru is very impotant to Kyo and that he should really get going because she'd be at home waiting for him. As Kyo turns to go, Mr. Honda then says he hopes Kyo will take good care of Tohru, because when she's happy then so is everyone else. Kyo quietly says that ther's nothing he can do really (since he'll be locked up soon), and Mr. Honda simply smiles and says, "I see."

Back at the house, Tohru shows Kyo the picture of Katsuya she keeps behind her picture of Kyoko. Kyo tells her that it's very like her to keep a picture of him after all. As he looks at it, he thinks that the expression on Mr. Honda's face, that teasing expression he had, looks a lot like Katsuya's.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now, that whole thing of Tohru not being Katsuya's daughter is a bunch of tripe. After all, Kyoko must have loved him very deeply. So much in fact that she'd have never 'stepped out' on him. I mean, the utter dispair she felt after he died says a lot in just how much she felt for him.
And a bunch of us are thinking that if Kyo was able to hug Tohru through the sheets without transforming, it must be evidence of how the curse is starting to weaken. I myself don't know for sure. It made for an utterly adorable scene, however.
Wow!! That always takes such a big chunk of time!! The next chapter is supposed to be about the Mabudachi Trio. Yay! Hatori!!!
Yeah, they are overreacting. Which is why Emi made an FMA thread on the ATACT board.
Yeah, I put a little notice on there about spoiler stuff, too. Basically I said that spoilers are allowed just with a notice in the titlre. I mean, after that, everyone is on their own.
