Today we had ice cream at work. I had a scoop of vanilla and one of chocolate. Later, I had the remains of the orange sherbet. I told mom it was a good thing we went to the gym afterward.
I was reading a new series yesterday. I liked it.
This is by the same manga-ka as Hot Gimmick For those of you who were wary of that series, worry not. No misogyny seems to be present in this series.
Summary:
The heroine is high schooler Yura, whose mother is one of Japan's most famous and beautiful actress; and father is a World famous Musician. Yura is quiet, and gets nervous in front of crowds. People around often compare her to her famous parents. Yura's world gets rocked with the sudden return of her actress mother, coldly announcing her divorce to Yura's father, who got caught having an affair and Yura's mom has no intention of taking care of their high school daughter. But this just isn't enough, Yura later on finds her mother having sex with her neighbor/best friend/ first love!! Yura then wants to destroy her mother's beautiful actress image and decides to become an actress herself and beat her mother. There starts the fun! Yura's troubles and success' in trying to become an actress, her meeting lots of beautiful actors and singers and idols. A love triangle is in the air.
This is a short series. Only three volumes. I was only able to read two of them. It's been liscenced by Viz under their Shojo Beat umbrella. From what I read so far, it looks cute! The heroine, Yura, seems to be very likable if a little meek. It's tends to be typical of most shojo heroines though. I do however think Yura's mom is a bitch. She tells the world how wonderful she is as a mother, when in actuality, she cares almost nothing for her. She's almost always belittleing Yura, saying she can't hack it and she should just give up. This only fuels Yura's fire however.
The guys seems to be pretty likeable so far. The two main guys are... twins. Now I don't know if Japan has a facination with twins or what. Especially identical; especially male. I mean, this is one of a number of series I've followed that has a set of twins in it. Anyway, both of them are musicians. One, the surlier of the two, is in one of those ubiquitous Japanese boy bands and the other, the friendlier one, is a solo artist.
Yura's somewhat shady manager, manages to get her a commercial/drama which the former twin happens to costar in. She lands the lead as well as his romantic interest. He doesn't seem too impressed at first, but once she starts to inhabit her character, she begins to catch his interest.
His brother in the meantime, seems to genuinely be interested in her, despite getting off on a rocky start. At first, he seems only to be interested in her in order to try to get close to her musician father. After a while, however, he seems to begin to like her for her.
I dunno how it's all gonna play out since I've only read the first two volumes so far, but I'm genuinely interested in seeing how it all plays out. I was a little disappointed with the series that came before (Ouijisama no Kanojo), so I hope this one has a more satisfying ending. And I hope Yura can tell off her bitch of a mother.
I also got the newest issue of Runaways in the mail.
I'm really really really trying to like Ramos' art, but I just... I just can't. They look like exaggerated caricatures of themselves. I mean, his art style might be fine for other books, but I just can't get into it with this one. I think I was supremely spoiled by Alphona's art. It's partially what got me into the series in the first place. I'm a real stickler for this kind of stuff. If the art or writing start to suffer in a series, I tend to drop them. I've seen it happen a lot with certain series, particularly in Western comics. That's one of the things I like about manga. One writer/artist throughout the entire series. none of these change-ups that are prevalent in Western comics. A series could start off really strong, but with all the switching out of the writers and/or artists, it can suffer drastically. I dropped Batgirl and Generation X due to this.
Story wise, it's pretty good. I know Moore can do really strong characters, but them those are generally his own. I like how is seems the story's going to focus a lot of Karolina, which is fine with me. She a good strong character. I hope they delve more into Klara and her case of culture shock and her abuse issues. I mean, I don't wanna make it a huge factor or anything, but maybe a little brother/sister bonding with her and Chase, who has abuse history of his own.
I'm thinking of changing out some of my icons. I have 115, and you would think it'd be plenty, but apparently not...

Today in History: 1859
Colonel Edwin Drake found oil. The well was soon pumping out 20 barrels of crude oil a day - and Titusville, Pennsylvania became the home of the first oil well.
